FOOD IN DA NANG: 5 UNMISSABLE LOCAL RESTAURANTS CHOSEN BY THE AMAZING BARNEY`S HOSTEL DA NANG STAFF!!!

Nothing is casual at Barney's Hostel in Da Nang, and to make unforgettable your hostel experience, we selected our 5 favorite local restaurants: must try all!!

 

1. BANH TRANG CUON THIT HEO – rice papers with pork and anchovy fish sauce

The name says it all. It’s as simple as rolling rice paper with pork and some vegetables, dipping in the sauce and eat. There are 3 things to this dish:

- The pork: There are fat at both ends of a slice.

- The sauce: fermented Anchovy fish sauce (mắm nêm)

- The greens: include more than 10 different kinds of herbs such as lettuce, Thai basils, peppermint, banana blossoms, etc.

HOW TO ROLL: Basically for many dishes you’d roll the same way but Banh trang cuon thit heo, it’s slightly different. There is one more layer of triangle rice flour (which looks like Pho before being cut into strings) to add to the rice paper before inserting vegetables and pork. One tip is to put the rice paper right on top of the rice flour and quickly take it out, one piece of the rice flour with stick together with the rice paper.

2. TRAN II – 334 Hai Phong

– 39.000 VND (normal pork) or 50.000 VND (roasted pork) per serve. Tran II is spacious, clean, with very nice and professional staffs. They provide a huge amount of vegetables for each serve and the sauce is delicious. However, the pork is often cut too thinly which is a big minus.

 

2. BANH XEO - savory pancakes

Bánh xèo (literally “sizzling cake”) are Vietnamese savoury pancakes made out of rice flour, water, turmeric powder, stuffed with slivers of fatty pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts and then pan fried. Traditionally, they are served wrapped in mustard leaf, lettuce leaves, and stuffed with mint leaves, basil, fish leaf and/or other herbs, and dipped in a prepared dipping sauce. In the Central region, the pancake is dipped in a special ‘tuong’ sauce which consists ofpeanuts, hoisin sauce and garlic.

The best and most famous shop for Banh xeo in Danang is without doubt “Ba Duong” (literally means “Mrs Duong”. If you’ve noticed, lots of food shops in Central Vietnam begin their names with “Ba”. Well, lucky lucky Central misters). This shop is located in a very small street but is always crowded. There are around 4 more banh xeo shops opened up in that incredibly narrow street just to compete with “Ba Duong”, so make sure you get to the right shop. If you ride a motorbike, make sure you park in Ba Duong’s parking lot unless you want to receive unfriendly glances from other shop owners.

3. BANH BEO, NAM, LOC – mini rice cakes in mini bowls with sauce

First off, most food shops sell these 3 kinds of “banh” together. In the central region, the name “banh” is applied to many kinds of food made from fine powder except for noodles. Before got boiled in a big pot, Banh nam and banh bot loc is wrapped in banana leaves, while banh beo is poured and boiled in small bowls. These 3 are served with 2 different bowls of fish sauce: one is more salty than the other. Be sure to use the more salty one for banh nam and bot loc, and the other for banh beo. Banh beo varies in shape and size from shop to shop.

4. BUN BO – rice vermicelli with beef broth

Bún in the central and south region is as famous as Pho in the north of Vietnam. It comprises of rice vermicelli, a special broth and beef or other ingredients. The broth has a fair smell of lemongrass and is cooked for many hours with beef bones to make it lightly sweet. Bún in the central region, especially in Hue city, can be very hot and spicy. Bún is accompanied with many different kinds of beef or interior parts of a cow for you to choose: Tái (rare steak), Nạm (flank), Gân (tendon), Bò viên (meatballs), Giò heo (pork leg)… To make it easy, order a “thập cẩm” which means one bowl with all of them.

To me and many people that I know in Danang, the best shop is “Ba Dieu” (actually most people refer to it as “bun Tran Tong” because it’s located in Tran Tong street). I think that their broth is superb. However, as the shop is so good, they often run out of stock and close early at around 6-7pm (they open at 2pm). Their Bun bo is the kind of dish that can make you feel soooo happy and pleased after eating.

5. BANH CANH – thick noodles with broth

“Banh canh” litterally means “cake” (noodles made from wheat or rice flour) and “soup”. Banh canh in Da Nang has its own distinctive taste. The noodles are usually made from rice flour, wheat flour or rice starch, unlike other localities in the south where noodles are made from tapioca starch and are circular in shape like “bún” noodles.
